A man has been arrested after he allegedly shouted a racial slur at a black woman in a grocery store in Spokane, Washington, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s office said it has received multiple reports of the incident.
The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m.
Saturday in the store parking lot of the Walmart store at 7th Avenue and Main Street.
The store is owned by Walmart.
Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the store following a call from a customer who saw a man yelling racial slurs at the woman.
According to the Sheriff’s department, the woman told deputies she was in the parking lot when she heard someone yelling “you’re a f—ing n—a” and a “n—– is a f——” at her.
Deputies said the man, who is described as a white male, was seen on surveillance video approaching the store.
He was arrested after officers spotted him and he was identified by the Sheriff as a suspect in the crime.
He has been charged with harassment and battery, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.
The man is scheduled to appear in court in Spokane.
The Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Walmart spokesperson said the store is aware of the situation and that the incident was “a regrettable incident that has been reported.”
The Sheriff said the suspect was not a store employee, but a customer.
The suspect, who was identified as “a white male,” was arrested when he was taken into custody.
He faces up to three years in prison on harassment charges.
